Class 1 - explosive substances and articles
Class 1 is sub-divided into six divisions (1.1 to 1.6) to indicate the degree of risk posed by the articles in transit. Division 1.1 is for items that have a Mass Explosion Hazard, where the entire load could explode virtually instantaneously. Examples could include gunpowder, TNT, Depth charges and other military explosive ordinance. Division 1.6 contains items that have no Mass Explosion Hazard, are very insensitive and almost impossible to detonate accidentally. Such items exist on a fine line between being explosives and flammable solids.
DIVISION 1.1 -
Substances and articles that have a Mass Explosion Hazard.
e.g. Dynamite.
DIVISION 1.2 -
Substances and articles that have a projection hazard
But not a Mass Explosion Hazard.
e.g. Military Ordinance.
DIVISION 1.3 -
Substances and articles which have a fire hazard and either a
Minor blast hazard or a minor projection hazard
or both,
But not a Mass Explosion Hazard.

Companies involved with the carriage of Class 1 items can appoint a DGSA such as RoadSafe, who are approved to advise on all classes of hazardous goods, or a specialist explosives-only adviser. Additionally, drivers of vehicles transporting these goods must take an additional module in their ADR certification examination. |
