How do I know if I need a DGSA ?

If you manufacture, transport, store or transport dangerous goods for another, you may need one.

There are many exemptions and circumstances in which the DGSA is not required. So, if you're not entirely certain, why not contact us for a free, no obligation, assessment ? Or, if you prefer, you can view the entire regulations by clicking HERE.

Why should I pay for an outside DGSA, couldn't I employ one full time ?

Yes, you can employ anyone who holds a current, valid Certificate Of Training. However, employing a "consultant" such as RoadSafe has several advantages:

•  No extra costs for training, manuals, examinations etc.

•  No need for holiday or sickness payments and cover.

•  No need for permanent office space.

•  Complete freedom to drop one DGSA in favour of another if they fail to  perform.

•  An external DGSA cannot just leave to join another company after receiving all that expensive training you've provided.

Because of these factors, all but the biggest and busiest transport companies can afford the luxury of a full time DGSA.

Do I need a DGSA for dangerous goods by air or sea ?

Oddly no, only for transport by road, rail and on inland waterways. Sea and air are governed by their own regulations, which require you to have an "Approved Person" trained in these regulations. But for many companies it can be very advantageous to have a DGSA qualified to advise on them also as invariably the dangerous goods are at sometime transported by road to the port or airport.

As a general rule of thumb, the bigger the company, the more hazardous goods handled, stored or transported the higher the cost. Naturally we are very sympathetic to Owner-Drivers and will adjust our costs and payment schedules to accommodate them wherever possible.
