Class 3 - Flammable Liquids

Class 3 - The flammable liquidsFlammable liquids of Class 3 are by far the most common materials carried on all modes of transport. It covers a huge range of materials  such as some molten solids, desensitized liquid explosives and all liquids of a flash point ≤61oC (petrol, solvents, paints, thinners, alcohols etc).

As such a wide range of materials are included, Class 3 has several internal sub-divisions which are decided by any secondary hazards that may be present. However unlike Classes 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6, no differing hazard labels are required. The sub-divisions are defined by secondary toxic, corrosive and explosive properties.

From a scientific viewpoint, All flammable liquids give off vapour (gas) that is heavier than air. It is the vapour that burns, not the liquid. The vapour flows as a liquid would; following any gradients, collecting in pits, sewers and gullies, and can travel a considerable distance from its source.

Companies dealing with liquid fuels ("Mineral Oils") can appoint a DGSA qualified only in Class 3 materials, or a company such as RoadSafe who can offer a wider knowledge base.
