Class 7 - Radioactive Substances

Radioactive materials

Despite the familiar images, this is not something that generally happens when transporting radioactive materials. These substances can cause great concern to the general public, with some justification, when they are seen in transport but really pose no more risk than any other hazardous material.

Class 7 items continuously give off particles (α or β) or high energy rays (γ) e.g. X-Rays.

Unlike any other hazard class, Class 7 is very complicated, requiring the use of mathematics and intricate tabulation to interpret the regulations fully.

Because of this, DGSA's can receive specific class 7 only training to ensure they are competent. This doe's not mean however that companies transporting small radioactive articles such as smoke detectors, diagnostic isotopes, radioactive salts or radiopharmaceuticals, cannot appoint a company such as RoadSafe, as these low-level materials are quite straight forward.

As with Explosives (Class 1), vehicle drivers must complete an additional module on their ADR training.
