Our main public course provides a practical, comprehensive look at healthcare waste management, from classification and segregation through to storage, collection, transport, documentation and audit.
Designed for people responsible for producing, handling or overseeing healthcare waste, the course is suitable for NHS and private healthcare providers, hospitals, clinics, GP and dental practices, laboratories, pharmacies, care settings, facilities teams and waste management staff.
Course content
Module 1: Healthcare waste legislation
Understand the key requirements and guidance that shape healthcare waste management, including the Environmental Protection Act, Controlled Waste Regulations, Duty of Care, environmental permitting, waste classification, HTM 07-01 and the NHS Clinical Waste Strategy.
Module 2: Waste classification
Explore what counts as healthcare waste and how clinical and non-clinical, hazardous and non-hazardous wastes differ. The module covers EWC/List of Waste codes, hazardous properties, pharmaceutical waste and cytotoxic and cytostatic waste.
Module 3: Segregation and colour coding
A highly practical module using examples to help participants match waste to the correct stream and container. Learn why segregation at the point of production matters and how incorrect disposal can create safety, environmental and cost problems.
Module 4: Storage
Review internal and external storage arrangements, including security, containers, spill containment, cleaning, pest control and access.
Module 5: Collection and transport
Follow the waste journey from internal movement to collection. Topics include contractor arrangements, packaging, labelling and the relevant dangerous goods and ADR considerations.
Module 6: Documentation
Understand the records used to describe and transfer waste, including waste transfer notes, consignment notes, Duty of Care information and contractor documentation.
Module 7: Auditing
Consider what a healthcare organisation should audit, including segregation, container selection, contractor performance, documentation, storage and training records.
Module 8: Sustainability
Explore how effective waste management can support sustainability, circular economy approaches and carbon reduction. HTM 07-01 covers safe management alongside environmental and carbon impacts, while the NHS Clinical Waste Strategy sets out the role of improved waste management in the NHS’s net zero ambitions.
What participants will gain
By the end of the course, participants should be better equipped to classify and segregate healthcare waste, review storage and collection arrangements, understand key documentation and identify areas for audit or improvement.
The day combines guidance with practical examples, with particular emphasis on segregation and colour coding. Course content can be aligned with the relevant local procedures and waste arrangements.
