Suitable for practice, hospital, estates, facilities, waste, health and safety, infection prevention, environmental and procurement managers, and other personnel with waste oversight responsibilities.
Course content
Legislation and management responsibilities
Review the key legislation and guidance affecting healthcare waste, including Duty of Care, environmental permitting, waste classification, HTM 07-01 and the NHS Clinical Waste Strategy. Explore how responsibilities should be assigned and managed across the organisation.
Waste classification and segregation
Consider how healthcare waste is classified, including clinical and non-clinical, hazardous and non-hazardous streams, List of Waste codes, pharmaceutical waste and cytotoxic and cytostatic waste. Practical exercises help managers identify common segregation and container-selection problems.
Storage and site controls
Review internal and external storage arrangements, security, access, container suitability, spill containment, cleaning and pest control. Consider how procedures and site checks can help keep storage areas safe and suitable.
Collection, transport and contractor oversight
Examine internal movement, collection arrangements, packaging and labelling, and the dangerous goods requirements that may apply, including ADR. Learn what managers should check when appointing and overseeing waste contractors and reviewing collection performance.
Documentation and records
Explore waste transfer notes, hazardous waste consignment notes, Duty of Care information, contractor documentation and record keeping. Consider how to check that documentation supports an accurate description and appropriate transfer of waste.
Auditing and assurance
Identify what an effective healthcare waste audit should examine, including segregation, container selection, storage, contractor performance, documentation and staff training records. Practical discussion helps participants consider how to record findings, assign actions and follow up improvements.
Sustainability and improvement
Explore how healthcare waste management can support waste prevention, the circular economy and carbon reduction. The course considers how accurate classification and segregation can support safe, sustainable waste decisions.
What participants will gain
By the end of the course, participants should be better equipped to oversee healthcare waste arrangements, identify gaps in compliance and assurance, review contractor and documentation controls, and plan practical improvements.
The course combines current guidance with practical exercises and management-focused examples. It can be aligned with your organisation’s procedures and waste arrangements.
