Suitable for GP surgeries, dental practices, veterinary practices, clinics, care homes and laboratories.
Course content
Identifying and disposing of sharps
Learn what counts as a sharp and how to follow safe disposal procedures at the point of use.
Sharps containers
Review container selection, placement, filling, closure and safe handling. Consider how the right container, positioned within reach, can help reduce the risk of injury.
Storage and collection
Explore safe storage before collection, how to prepare containers for collection and the records that support waste handover.
Accidental injuries and spillages
Discuss the immediate steps to take following a needle-stick injury or a spillage, including reporting the incident and following your organisation’s exposure response procedures.
What participants will gain
By the end of the course, participants should be better equipped to use and manage sharps containers safely, follow local procedures for storage and collection, and know how to respond if an injury or spillage occurs.
The course uses practical examples and should be aligned with the procedures and risk assessments used in your workplace.
