Improve segregation, support compliance with HTM 07-01 and identify opportunities to reduce waste costs.
This practical course is designed around the healthcare waste streams and day-to-day arrangements found in GP practices. It helps staff understand what should go into each waste stream, how waste should be stored and collected, and what to check when working with a waste contractor.
Suitable for GPs, practice managers, nurses, healthcare assistants, reception and facilities staff, and anyone responsible for handling or overseeing waste in a GP practice.
Course content
Clinical and non-clinical waste
Understand what counts as clinical waste and what does not. Use practical examples to explore how correct classification can help prevent recyclable or non-hazardous waste entering more costly specialist streams.
Segregation and colour coding
Review yellow, orange and offensive waste streams, along with sharps, pharmaceutical waste and cytotoxic or cytostatic waste. Practical exercises help participants choose the appropriate stream and container in line with local procedures.
Storage and collection
Consider safe storage within the practice, collection arrangements and the steps staff can take to prepare waste for handover.
Documentation and contractor checks
Explore consignment documentation and the checks that help a practice understand its waste arrangements and contractor responsibilities.
Spillages and staff responsibilities
Discuss how to respond to spillages by following practice procedures, and clarify the responsibilities of staff who produce, handle or oversee healthcare waste.
HTM 07-01 and ADR awareness
Explore the relevance of HTM 07-01 to waste management in primary care and introduce ADR awareness for healthcare waste transport. The course helps participants recognise when transport requirements may need to be considered.
What participants will gain
By the end of the course, participants should be better equipped to distinguish clinical from non-clinical waste, improve segregation, follow local procedures and review key parts of their practice’s storage, collection and documentation arrangements.
The course uses GP practice examples and practical activities. It supports local procedures and risk assessments rather than replacing them.
