Help your team recognise hazardous waste and handle it responsibly. This practical awareness course covers the everyday steps that help prevent waste being mixed, mislabelled or stored unsafely—and when to seek specialist advice.
Available online or in-company, the course is suitable for employees, warehouse personnel, laboratory and maintenance staff, facilities teams and new starters.
Course content
Recognising hazardous waste
Learn what hazardous waste is and explore common examples found in workplaces, warehouses, laboratories and maintenance settings.
Segregation, labelling and storage
Understand why different waste streams may need to be kept separate, how to use suitable containers and labels, and what to consider when storing waste safely.
Spill response and PPE
Review basic precautions, the role of personal protective equipment and how to respond to a spill by following your workplace procedures.
Duty of care and documentation
Get an introduction to waste duty of care and the basic records and transfer documents staff may encounter when waste is collected or moved.
When to ask for specialist advice
Learn to recognise when a waste stream, container or situation needs further assessment, and who to contact for help.
What participants will gain
By the end of the course, participants should be better equipped to recognise potential hazardous waste, follow workplace procedures for segregation and storage, and raise concerns when something is unclear.
The course provides general awareness. It does not replace a formal waste classification, site-specific risk assessment or specialist advice where these are needed.

Waste requirements can vary across the UK and depend on the waste and the activities involved. Businesses should follow the rules that apply in their location and seek specialist advice when needed. See GOV.UK guidance for hazardous-waste producers and holders and the waste duty of care code of practice.
