To comply with the European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR), companies engaged in the loading, unloading or carriage of dangerous goods by road, rail or inland waterways may have to appoint a Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser (DGSA).

ADR Driver Training

An ADR Vocational Training Certificate is required by any driver carrying "In-Scope" packaged Dangerous Goods, for a tanker of >1m3 or tank container of >3m3 - regardless of the gross weight of the carrying vehicle, and is valid for five years.

CAA (IATA) Dangerous Goods Training

Air freight accounts for only 0.5 per cent of the UK's international goods movements by weight, but 25 per cent by value. Dangerous Goods training is a mandatory requirement for anyone involved in the transport of dangerous goods by air (shippers, packers, freight forwarders, cargo handlers, airline personnel etc).

Rail Transport (RID)

Rail freight has increased by 50% since 1994, with a government target to increase by 80% within ten years, and now accounts for 12% of the total surface freight in the UK. Intermodal traffic has been growing steadily at around 10 per cent per annum since 2002 to 2009.

CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) Transport Managers (Road Haulage)
Level 3

Applicants for a Goods Vehicle Operators' Licence must show that they are a "professionally competent" Transport Manager, or that they employ another who meets this requirement to act on their behalf.
